How can I have a book sent to my local branch?

I see an item at another library and I want to pick it up at my branch. How can I place a hold on it?

Answer

You can have any circulating item sent to any NYPL location you choose; this is known as reserving or placing a hold.

You may place a hold on any item that has a "Place Hold" or "Place Request" button above the item that you locate in the catalog (https://browse.nypl.org) by entering your NYPL card barcode and your PIN (Personal Identification Number)/Password  After that, select your preferred pick up location from the list, and click "SUBMIT".

Keep in mind that if you want the item today or tomorrow, please consult the catalog record's list of copies and click on a location where the item is listed as "Available" (not "Due Jan 5", or "In Transit", etc.) and call that branch. Staff will be able to do a "shelf check" and if they locate the item they will hold it the branch circulation desk for one day so you can pick it up.
